Expedition: Longevity and Adventure

My Name is Scott Wiseman, Founder and Chief Movement Specialist at Wiseman Movement.
My Movement journey didn't begin until my Sophomore year of High School. Up until that point I played hardly any sports, wasn't very active, at all, and played way too many video games. It was ultimately my mom taking me snowboarding that got me away from the screen. Also, my best friend Pete, had a sick Schwinn Moab mountain bike, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. One thing led to the next, and I was working at the Local Bike Shop, renting skis in the winter. Summer came around and my first boss, Mark, asked me if I would like to stay on for summer, and learn about cycling. I was ecstatic. Throw in an Outward Bound multi day Raft and Canoe expedition into the mix, and I was on my way to becoming an Outdoor Adventure Dude!
During my Junior and Senior year I attended the Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning in Denver, CO. We had rock climbing as an elective! We also went on a variety of multi day adventure trips including a 2 week backpacking cultural immersion trip to visit the Indigenous Tarahumara in the Copper Canyon of Mexico.
The Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning is an Expeditionary Learning- School, based on Outward Bound Principals.
Physical Fitness was a foundational design pillar of Outward Bound.
You can start to see where this is going and how it STUCK.
Fast Forward 20 years, and by now I have been an international whitewater professional, High School Mountain Bike Coach, Competitor in cycling and running events. But my triumphs were hard earned, because also during those 20 years I was plagued with substance abuse, depression and my old original nemesis: Video Games. After having been in and out of detox and alcohol rehab multiple times, my persistence and perseverance has helped me get back on the track of Physical Fitness.
Before I turned 40, I had no house, no money for retirement, no wife, no kids, only some cool adventure stories. I couldn't kill my self through alcohol and video games. It was very sobering realizing what little I had. I also came to the realization that I was starting the second half of my life, and was still going to be here for a long time. So I needed to make an investment, with the maximum amount of beneficial return. The answer was simple: Invest in my health, wellness, and physical fitness and the rest would come easy. I Promised myself that I would turn my 40s into my new 20s. These days I am without question in the best shape of my life, as I continue to make movement and nutrition pivotal DAILY factors in my expedition towards longevity. Combining all I have learned through physical fitness and adventure, I have endeavored to help others in their expedition towards longevity. Join me and lets make movement fun again!
